I was curious about what everyone's opinion on what will happen in 2012. According to the Mayans and other cultures, prophecies, etc., when the world as we know it is going to end in one way or another. I'm a person who likes things that have a clear explanation, a big fan of science to say the least. I like seeing things a bit clearly, with fact and supporting evidence. Eh, I may not be the most logical person, but when things are presented to me in this fashion... I tend to take it a bit more seriously than baseless assumptions.
Now, some scientists say there's a meteor or something that is supposed to come dangerously close to the gravitational field of the earth and could potentially be pulled toward our planet causing an impact and explosion that would alter life entirely. Considering the dust and debris that would amass and make visibility and air quality potentially low enough to be unsuitable for breathing and thus kill us, I don't particularly like the idea of suffocating to death and since this is such a controversial theory, I choose not to believe it. Haha.
Then there are those that go the mystic route. The Mayans were an advance civilization for their time, that much is certainly true and should be taken into mild consideration. However, they didn't exactly say how the world would end in 2012, and the theories people have developed about that over time have been varied... and that's putting it lightly. Whether any of those theories are correct or not is extremely questionable in my opinion.
Then there is the route that the religious devout (particularly Christians) like to take. That 2012 is truly going to be the end of the world. Now, if anyone here has ever taken a look at the bible in either form (actually I think there are more than two to be honest, I like to be versed in what every person believes so I've delved into knowing about many religions in, at the minimum, the basest of ways) you'll see the idea of the end of the world from their scope in the Book of Revelation. However, the ideas in that book are vague enough to begin with and can be used to denote pretty much any period in human history. Which is why I don't exactly appreciate end of days stories... according to them, any time could be the end times. I'm a person who likes more concrete ideas, you see?
Now, the final idea is one I stumbled upon by chance. I was in Borders (bookstores... one of my homes away from home) and I came upon a book that had an interesting topic to say the least. I'm not finished with it yet, but the main idea of the book is that every so many thousand years, the earth's own kundalini moves from one part of the globe to another, bringing about an ideological change pretty much. Now, this intrigued me to say the least, and between the other books I'm reading, it's one I do keep coming back to. This is the one I would most like people's opinions on. I like a good debate or just simply hearing other people's thoughts on things.
Well, I am sorry for the behemoth of a post. Just wanted to stir up some conversation! Haha, whether it works or not... I don't know! That's it I guess!

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
Personally, I don't think anything is going to happen in 2012. Remember when everyone was freaking out because they thought the world was going to end in 2000 because of the Y2K bug? That never happened, did it? Idk, I just think it's another scare tactic to leave people frozen in time, rather than do anything meaningful.
What the scientists are talking about, with the meteor that is dangerously close to the earth, would also be what they consider to be "planet X" or Nibiru, the planet where the Annunaki came from according to Zecharia Sitchin. And if Sitchin's theory and calculations are correct, Planet X is not going to collide into the earth, but merely pass by it at a safe enough distance where the gravitational fields will not be interfered with.
And with the Mayans, the calendar cycle completes an entire revolution in 2012, and they predicted a change in, not quite an end to, the world. Yet again, many people are using it as a scare tactic.
I mean, if the world was really going to end, do you think people would sit there making hollywood films about it? I would hope not -_- Hopefully if the world was going to end we'd be spending that time and money finding out how to live on the moon.
Also, I've never heard of the earth having a kundalini, but it's certainly something I'll look into ^_^

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
I really don't think anything is going to happen either. XD I think it is much like the Y2K back in 1999 when the year 2000 was approaching. It's just fun to see what people think about everything. I dunno, I just like discussion. :D
Yeah, the book I found was at Borders and when I go back up to my room, I'll be certain to post the title and such if you want to look into it. I'd never heard of it either until I saw that book and it caught my curiosity. I'm a bit curious with many things, if you couldn't tell. ^_^;
Thanks for the response. :D

Curiousity is a wonderful thing ^_^ If humans were not curious beings we would certainly not have the knowledge we do today ^_^
If you wouldn't mind posting the title that would be wonderful ^_^ I like to research the crap out of everything so it would be a very interesting thing to look into ^_^ Thanks =)

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
thanks ^_^
that's weird, Melchizedek (i believe) is a name from the bible. And it's funny because I've seen some books in stores myself by this man that intrigued me... I'm curious as to whether that is his real name, or if it is a pen name, because it's an interesting coincidence i think =p (not to say he doesn't have credibility, actually quite the opposite of that haha. He seems as though he has done his research.)

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
It's always the ones with the questionable names that tend to grab your attention. Be it a pen name or not, it grabbed you. Haha.
Um, well, many names are from the bible in some way, since it's influenced people's lives for how many years? A work of fiction that holds that much power.... sort of funny... if it wasn't so... sad? To me, that's like someone following Harry Potter like it's the truth. They're both fiction but people follow and take one for word (in extreme cases literally) and they look at the other as a child's story. Hm.
Anyway, yeah, I'm reading several books at once, so, I haven't truly finished this yet. I need to crunch down and get some major reading done soon... that isn't college related. -__-;

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
Haha yeah true story.
Well every piece of fiction is based on some truth if you think of it. And in the case of the bible, it was derived from actual events, but the story got twisted and bent so much that it can't be considered truth anymore. It was like a bad game of telephone starting with the Sumerians, and moving to the Mayans and such, then Greeks and Romans and the like, and so on. Then after time, when it finally reached what we know as Christians, the truth was ridiculously distorted in so many ways. The multiple Annunaki were smushed into one "All Knowing" force that just sort of floats in the sky. The deluge went from wiping out a continent to wiping out the entire earth. So many things that turn the history of the progression of mankind into a fairy tale that people take to heart. And it is because of fear and uncertainty that they do so. It's sad.
Sorry -_-* I went on a bit of a tangent there haha.

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
Haha, it's perfectly alright, I go on tangents all the time. And you're right, the story has been twisted and whatnot. What I dislike about it though is that the writers of the Bible as it is known today claim to have been divinely inspired. Now, not to knock a religion I was once a part of (was trapped in Catholic school for pretty much my entire school career, caused a bit of ruckus in high school theology though, fun times), alright maybe knock it just a bit because I find it ludicrous now... but honestly.
Think about this... if someone claimed to be divinely inspired today, people write them off as looneys. But it was perfectly acceptable that those men were because it was further back in time, as if mental illness is a relatively new thing that just started to happen? It's like because there was no diagnosis for it, it simply didn't exist before the diagnosis, which in itself, is a bit ridiculous, you know?
But, yes, you are correct. I just... have my issues with people have a "greater than thou" attitude... and I now from experience that Christians (Roman Catholics more specifically) like to have that attitude. To me, no person is greater than another... but eh... I'm rambling again. Haha.

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
Yeah, I don't know if they were loony or trying to gain control of the general populace or just simply trying to find something to believe in, but if anything they were divinely inspired through plagiarism haha.
And when it comes to mental disorders, Psychologists determine any behavior that's abnormal to the general population to be a disorder. (That's the main reason I'm changing my major from Psych to Ancient Civ). Haha, I can't quite be a Psychologist if according to the general population I'm nuts because I talk to demons =p hahaha.
And I completely agree with you. It's the "holier than thou" syndrome haha. I can't stand when people try to one up other people, about anything. -_- It just irks me haha.
Don't worry about rambling haha, you have a point. =p

Re: Conpiracy/history.... the end?
Ah, yes, psychology. Fun subject. However, in my opinion, just like the saying 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', each person's perception on sanity as a whole varies. Some people find it perfectly acceptable to do horrible things to other people. They rationalize it and don't see anything wrong with it. Some may call that insane, but to the person doing it, they think they're perfectly sane. I hope that came out the right way. x:
Hey, at least you have a good grip on your major. I'm just... interested in far too many things to nail myself down. Right now, I'm all about art... before I was all about medicine... before that? I was all about the performing arts. I have too many interests. It's a bit irritating because I want to be able to do everything I love but just the thought alone doesn't seem feasible rationally. :\
Yeah, I really hate that attitude. I mean... it's the whole American idea that "all men are created equal" and some of those bible thumping people are the ones that like to think of people as unequal most of the time. Not saying that other people don't, just something I've observed over the years that I spent in catholic schools. I know not all are like that, but it's just really irritating to me.
Haha, I'm glad that you don't mind my rambling, I'm always a bit worried that I'll irk people. x:
